I once asked my step-mom
why she believed. She was a practical lady. Worked in a large corporation and then retired. Much to do each day! She smiled and then said
'faith'.
At the time, I thought that was a little
simple. What with all we have at our fingertips ... thousands of books, TV, the web, and a constant discussion of this and that.
Just 'faith'? Not a long discussion of the logic and the probabilities and the possibilities and the alternatives (that
is how we live our lives these days!).
You see, as much as you have 'Christians' and 'churches' and 'political agendas' and 'polls' and so forth, in the end, it all works out to just a person and their
own belief.
Faith in the
unseen. What you can't 'know'. The mysteries of life. The expression on your child's face when they learn something new. The sadness of seeing destruction and the
certainty that this can't be 'all' there is.
Hope.
The 'faith of our fathers'? Does that matter? As if they didn't face the same
struggles that you face and more?
Ever think why they
sought faith? Living here in Arizona, you see nearby broken and eroded old chapels in the desert. Over 400 years old (that's old here!). What you can't see is the
individual who typically braved the Atlantic from Spain. Then slowly rode north from Mexico City into a hostile world to tell the original folks here about their
faith. Quite often, after their arrival, they were 'alone' for years on end. Built their chapels. And taught those around them.
Why?
'Faith' very much belongs to
you. You have to work it out yourself. Through the ages, believers have wanted to
'prove' faith. Indeed with today's wonderful scientific successes, even more so, you'd like to 'prove' faith. Achieve
certainty.
But what if you
can't 'prove' faith? Do you reject it? Laugh at it? Ridicule it? As if something else in your life has 'certainty'? Truth be known, is the issue really just 'faith'? Or is it the
other believers? As if
they are
you.
You
do want meaningfulness. Hope. Peace with yourself.
That is what 'faith' delivers. A
calmness that stretches beyond your life. And over your life.
Why not
explore faith? It's
your time and your life. We've included several
internet sites for your reading pleasure. And 'of course'(!) if you'd like to discuss the subject, we'd certainly enjoy the
conversation with you. 'Think' about it!
