Ancient Spirituality
Have you ever noticed that each generation is 'smarter' than the previous generation. Then, it makes the same mistakes, as if today didn't already happen before?! Technology increases this way of thinking. 'We're smarter than 100 years ago, since we have more technology', right?
We are more knowledgeable, yes. But smarter? Don't think so. Go down to the library and read about the Egyptians 5000 years ago. For whatever reason, they just couldn't control themselves ... they wrote about 'everything'!! And what's so odd, is that what they wrote about might have occured only yesterday. At your house! That's when you begin to wonder about just 'how much' have humans really improved?
Sure, we don't put ourselves in 40-story pyramids! But outside of technology, not much is really different. Sometimes, to get some 'perspective', it's good to go back in time and read 'the ancients'.
Go back to the library. Read about the Egyptian gods (one time a pharaoh proposed 'god-consolidation', but his successor put a stop to that!). The Assyrian gods. Babylonian gods. Change continents? How about the Mayan and Aztec gods? Or here in Arizona, the Anasazi gods (the ancient ones). Keep going ... Eskimo gods and Thai gods. Papau New Guinea gods. India? Oh, you just don't know! Sure a lot of gods, huh? Even today! Surely not with 'all' of our 'technology'?! Oh, you are mistaken! Come to Sedona. We have lots! We have many, many choices for just 10,000 people, and a good selection of worldwide beliefs, all quite sincere. Gods are still with us, even with the invention of the iPod!
Why so many gods? And most importantly, why do YOU have a need for a god? True!
In ancient times, it had a lot to do with unpredictable 'nature' and disease. But today, with so much that is explainable? First we found the world wasn't flat. And then we 'discovered' the universe. Now the 'Big Bang'.
But still inside you, there remains that odd certainty and need for a god. No different from 5,000 year ago.
OK. So what about 'your' God?
Father-in-law complaining to Jacob: "I can understand your feeling that you must go, and your intense longing for your father's home. But why have you stolen my gods?"
(Gen 31:30 NLT)
God getting tired of rescues: "Yet you have abandoned me and served other gods. So I will not rescue you anymore. Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen! ..."
(Jdg 10:13-14a NLT)
