Schnebly Road used to be the road to Flagstaff, before the Oak Creek switchbacks. Now days, its a country road filled with oohs and ahs at every turn. And it's so easy to miss the cute little plants, the views are so massive. These pictures are near the start, for an easy 1 mile stroll.
PICTURE 1 - Approach from Parking Area. This looks back in the direction of Uptown Sedona over the hill. Mid-photo is 'the fin' and Steamboat Rock, with Wilson Mountain looming high above! This picture was taken a few days after a winter snow, and the draws are happy with their new moisture. Schnebly Hill

PICTURE 2 - Lee Mountain. When you hike the canyons, it's always difficult to pin down exactly where you're at! Here we're looking east toward the rim. And, if you look carefully, you can see the plants each slurping up a welcome refreshment! Schnebly Hill

PICTURE 3 - Friendly Tree. Well, he's really trying anyway! He's welcoming you to the red rocks hiding up over the hill. Weather-wise, Sedona is 'high desert', and the trees generally live much longer than you! But when they die, they just 'hang around'!! Schnebly Hill

PICTURE 4 - Grassy Hills. At a certain altitude, grass lands mix with cactus and junipers, creating a relaxed and beautiful background. Up above, the western sun is beginning to go down, with long shadows appearing. Schnebly Hill

PICTURE 5 - Wilson Mountain Here, we're looking north, with Wilson high above us to the right. In the center is 'the fin' (dead-on view), with Steamship Rock just to it's right. Wilson's height is where the rocks near us 'used to be'! We dropped down during a large earthquake long ago. Surprisingly the fault line turns toward us, instead of paralleling the creek erosion. Didn't want to fight the traffic! Schnebly Hill

PICTURE 6 - Bear Wallow Now, we're well into the canyons. This area is known as 'Bear Wallow' from bears in the old days wallowing in the collected water down below. Gaze at the early morning cliffs and their stolid majesty, as they meet another day. Schnebly Hill

PICTURE 7 - Named Rocks On your stroll, this begins the series of 'named' rocks. You have your 'Camel Rock' (easy to see coming down SH89A), and behind us here is 'Snoopy Rock'! Further along Schnebly Hill Road are the 'Cowpies' and 'Merry-Go-Round' rock. How much more fun can you have?! Schnebly Hill

PICTURE 8 - Evening Coldness Our stroll is now getting a little chilly! One last view of the rim, before turning back toward the parking area. If we wore a coat, we could walk all the way to Flagstaff! But, it's time for a nice cozy dinner in our Sedona. Schnebly Hill
