PICTURE 1 - Douglas Mansion The white building center-right is the Douglas Mansion SP, and to its left is the Daisy mine, source of millions of dollars of wealth. This was the second large mining venture, the first being further uphill west of Jerome. This one tunneled directly beneath Jerome!
PICTURE 2 - Empty Walls. It's always amazing about what people build out in the middle of nowhere. These were the late 1800s, and no matter the trouble, fancy buildings were a must! But, fire and ground shifting spelled their doom. That's the Sedona area in the background.
PICTURE 3 - Jerome Jail The jail actually started, further up the hill and across the street. But ground-shifting in the mines below flattened everything along the street. The jail slid downward by gravity. Hope it was empty!
PICTURE 4 - Main Street. Surprisingly, much of the downtown is still standing and a joy to view. Artist shops, restaurants, and even the Jerome police station populate the view. Make sure you allow yourself enough time to truly explore!
PICTURE 5 - Jerome High School At one time, everyone in the Verde river valley went to high school here. And it was a fancy high school too. Today, it's the home of many artist studios, which you can tour. And, remember your childhood!!
PICTURE 6 - Fire Station Jerome burned down several times due to wooden buildings and careless occupants. Eventually brick buildings were demanded! In the background is the other major mine. It started out underground, but flooded. So they built an open pit!
PICTURE 7 - Gas Station Finding a place for gasoline tanks, with a fire risk ... that was a problem. Here the station is well below Jerome and slowly grew over time, adding more services. But the customers left, and nows it's a nice picture.
PICTURE 8 - Desolation Gulch This is a picture from the rest area on SH89A above Jerome. The geology is typical for what they were mining. High above, not quite visible, were pipes to bring in water. Just climbing this is a trial!
