Listening Woman (1978) was the third of Hillerman's mysteries and the last one where Leaphorn is assigned to Tuba City. It's a really fascinating mystery to follow, especially as you try to visualize the layout near the Tso hogan and river below. The interconnecting caves are realistic, as the water level dropped. How they managed to get the boy scouts up there is not easy to figure out, though!
Maps below: a wide area map of the area from Tuba City to Kayenta, the area north of US160, and the most likely location for the Tso hogan and river cave.
Finding Hillerman is designed to help you understand story locations, while reading his mysteries. Plus, you learn about the Navajo Nation and Hopi!
