First Eagle (1998) appears to have been developed from a short story in Hillerman's 'Great Taos Bank Robbery' (1973). The issue of a deadly hanta-virus was significant then, and is still a major problem today in the southwest, illustrating the delicate balance between nature and man. 'First Eagle' also displays the symbolism of the eagle, high above the plateaus.

Below are three maps: a wide area map, Moenkopi Plateau area, and a detail map of Tuba City locations.
Finding Hillerman is designed to help you understand story locations, while reading his mysteries. Plus, you learn about the Navajo Nation and Hopi!
