ADDITIONAL NOTES
ROAD CONSTRUCTION (updated weekly; this = January 4, 2009):

VILLAGE OF OAK CREEK: The SH179 construction in the Village of Oak Creek is almost complete, with many enjoyable roundabouts! Figure 20 mph throughout. ADOT is putting in the final vegetation. Bicycle lanes! Visit the new National Forest Visitor Center too!

IN-BETWEEN: North of the Village, both separated lanes are now open. The new drive is just unbelievable. Great! Figure on 35 mph, with no slowdowns. Also, enjoy the stopping areas, plus the bike lane.

SEDONA: Once you hit the city limits on SH179, figure on a possible 15-20 minutes until you arrive at the 'Y' or the SH179/SH89 intersection. Most of the slowdown is near Poco Diablo and around Hillside Village shopping areas. If you have a large (length) vehicle, take it easy, since ADOT has very narrow lanes that curve back and forth in the construction area!

SH89A at SH179: The new roundabouts (two) work pretty good, with limited backups. Remember that if you're going left, to keep in the left lane as you proceed through the roundabouts.

If you're coming into Sedona from Oak Creek Canyon on weekends, be prepared for periodic backups just north of Sedona. Roll your window down and enjoy your drive! Best parking lot is behind the Wayside Church, as you enter Uptown. There's a free bus-stop there, too (doesn't visit the hotels though).

NECESSITIES:
Groceries Safeway and Bashas are in 'central' West Sedona, each with a small strip shopping center, and both on the north side of SH89A. The Village also has a grocery store about a block off of SH179. It was the original grocery for Sedona in Uptown, before moving.
Post Offices Sedona has two. The main one is at the 'Y' (SH89A/SH179). A smaller one is in West Sedona near the theater and is open on Saturdays. The Village also has a post office to the west of SH179 about a block, next to the fire station.
Medical Sedona has a small medical center for emergencies and 'light-duty'. It's in far-west Sedona, just BEFORE the last traffic light. More serious hospitals are in west Cottonwood on SH89A, and Flagstaff, north of the downtown.

WM Wal-Mart Supercenter on SH260 east of Hwy 89A in Cottonwood (928)634-0444
In general, if you need to do general shopping, Cottonwood, about 15m south of Sedona is your best bet. You can also find a Home Depot, the usual fast food choices and a hospital if needed.

GASOLINE:
There's a station near the Sedona 'Y' which in general has higher prices, reflecting its location.

This park is right next to the creek and near the great Sedona shopping areas. Sooo beautiful!
RV Camps There's additional RV camps in Cottonwood, Page Springs and Camp Verde. Most are on a river or creek (unusual in Arizona). Check the web or RV camping books, since a 'fit' with your rig varies. But passing by some of them, you wonder why you live in a house!
USFS Camping
There are four camps in Oak Creek Canyon with Pine Flat and Cave Springs having the most sites. All close in autumn except Manzanita which remains open. 'In general' if you arrive early Friday afternoon, you'll find a site, except for holidays. Take a look at the site USFS Red Rocks Area which lists a complete guide to resources.

The USFS also has a nice NEW visitor center, right before entering the Village of Oak Creek from the south (opens April 2008). Nice folks too. In general in the Sedona area, open forest camping isn't allowed but check with them.
