CATHEDRAL ROCK (CR)Originally called 'Courthouse' Rock, this rock formation is the result of faulting, erosion in fault-lines and being 'left behind' as the Mogollon Rim moved north. The Coconino sandstone and Kaibab limestone make up the 'cap'. Redness comes from Permian oxidized iron. Trail is UP with some scrambling.
DIRECTIONS: From Sedona, drive south on SH179 to Back Of Beyond Road at city limits; turn west 1m to trailhead.
DEVILS KITCHEN/POOLS/ARCHES (DK)This hike takes you along a large
sink hole, seven sculptured water
'pools' and then further up, the Soldiers Pass
arches. About 2m one way. This area has quite a number of arches where the water erodes BEHIND the rock facing, with the middle dropping out.
DIRECTIONS: From central West Sedona, drive north on Soldier's Pass Road 1.4m to Rim Shadows Dr. Follow signs to trailhead parking. This area popular; be courteous to local residents.
DEVILS DINING RM / SUBMARINE RK (DR)This is a VERY popular jeep tour but you can hike it for free! Pass a
sizable sinkhole and beautiful
cliffs overhead.
Submarine Rock is fascinatingly odd. At end is
'Chicken Point' where residents scare their visitors! Still a fairly peaceful hike (2m one-way).
DIRECTIONS: In Sedona, south on SH179: turn (east) on Morgan Rd opposite Red Rock Church, and follow it up to trailhead parking. You can hike the trail, or just walk the dirt road (or both!).
VULTEE ARCH (VA)Named for Vultee aircraft company exec/wife who crashed their plane in the 40s.
Large arch 40ft high and 50ft across. Hike either from Dry Creek area, or from Oak Creek Canyon, cutting through
Sterling Pass. Arch is about half-way between. Recent fire in Sterling Canyon; watch for caution signs.
DIRECTIONS: From Oak Creek side, park across from Manzanita campground 2m north of Sedona. Else, from West Sedona, drive 2m north on Dry Creek Rd to FR152, turning right. Then drive dirt-road 4.3m to trailhead. Don't leave valuables in car.
