ALLEN'S BEND - NATIVE RUINS (GP)Throughout the southwest, you'll see small rock piles left from ancient homes, here above the creek. The hike is from Grasshopper Point going north up canyon to Casner Canyon about 1m (flat).
Native ruins are about half-way. Pretty creek views. You'll also pass through an old orchard.
DIRECTIONS: From Sedona, drive up canyon about 2m to Grasshopper Point Day Use Area. Ample parking except on busy weekends.
BOYNTON CANYON - NATIVE RUINS (BC)Boynton is a
gorgeous but hot hike that winds its way up canyon about 3m (flat). You pass by a nice resort. The
1200AD sinagua ruins are half-way up on the canyon wall; pretty views.
Honanki and Polatki ruins are on the same ROAD, going the OTHER way about 3m (USFS protected).
DIRECTIONS: From West Sedona, drive north on Dry Creek Road, until it 'stops' at Boynton Pass Rd; turn right. Trailhead parking is on right before resort entrance. Trail is on north side of parking.
OLD POST ROAD TRAIL (OP)Some folks want off the beaten path. This would be it. 'Red Rock' was the earliest 1870s community around here, next to Cathedral Crossing. This
postal dirt trail went up out of the canyon (your hike), across Grasshopper Flats (West Sedona), and then up to Indian Gardens in Oak Creek Canyon.
SEE ALSODIRECTIONS: From West Sedona, drive south on UPPER Red Rock Loop Road. Follow signs to Crescent Moon, but just after turning off Red Rock, watch for hiking trailhead on left side of road.
MUNDS WAGON TRAIL (SH)This follows Schnebly Hill Road up canyon. It was the
late 1800s way to pasture on top and then Flagstaff. If you go in spring-time, you'll pass pretty
waterfalls that you can stand under, and of course the views are awesome! Eventually the trail will start CLIMBING up onto
Mogollon Rim for even better views! Hike as far as you want ... about 5-6m one way total.
DIRECTIONS: Just before SH179 crosses the creek, turn on Schnebly Hill Rd. Go out about 2mi; the trail parking is on the left. The trail starts near parking entrance.
LIME KILN HISTORIC WAGON TRAILThis was a 20m wagon road once used by Oak Creek farmers to take their produce by horse-drawn wagon to sell to the miners in Jerome. It connects Dead Horse Ranch SP near Cottonwood (main trailhead and monument) to Red Rock SP south of Sedona and is part of the Arizona State Trails System. Along it you can still see
old stone embankments. The southern end went to an
old lime kiln just north of Dead Horse, which was used to make mortar for brick homes in Cottonwood (fired limestone crushed and then mixed with water for mortar). The road itself was used by such Sedona luminaries as
Jim Thompson, Henry Schuerman and Frank Owenby for about 20 years.
SEE HISTORY TOURS!DIRECTIONS: Trail has multiple accesses along forest road crossings but main trailhead is at Deadhouse Ranch SP (entrance on Main going south from hwy89A in Cottonwood). Other end is at Red Rock SP, on LOWER Red Rock Loop Rd about 1m south of Sedona on 89A.
